Surabaya Restaurants and Dining

There really is an enormous selection of dining opportunities awaiting visitors to Surabaya, ranging from street vendors to traditional outdoor Indonesian restaurants (warungs). The Jalan Genteng Besar is known for its plentiful restaurants and warungs, while the Jalan Pemuda is always brimming with food stalls, both day and night, and stands across from the Plaza Surabaya.
There are also lots of dining establishments lining the Jalan Kayun and backing onto the river, offering pleasant views in a convenient location. For some of the best restaurants in the city of Surabaya, head to the neighbourhood directly south of the Gubeng Station and take a stroll along the Jalan Raya Gubeng, where a number of beautiful converted Dutch villas await diners and foodies.
What to Eat
There are lots of tasty dining specialities in Eastern Java, with local restaurants and warungs usually featuring at least some of the following dishes, which are often served on banana leaves (pincuks):
- Jongkong Surabaya - steamed rice flour and coconut pudding
- Kupang Lontong - rice cake with shellfish broth and chilli
- Lontong Balap - fried onion, bean sprouts, tofu, soybean / peanut 'lento' and hot soy sauce
- Rawon - thick, beef soup / stew
- Rujak Cingur - mango and other fruit, with cucumber, bean sprouts, peanuts, fermented soybean cake and a rich shrimp sauce
- Semanggi Surabaya - leafy vegetables and Semanggi leaves, with a spicy chilli and yam sauce
